EDUCATION

Education programs today must be focused on urban dwellers, teaching them to value architecture, design and past urban solutions. Specialist programs for preservationists are also key in determining the directions of renewal of pre- and post-war modernist buildings and neighborhoods. Finally, a re-examination of the education models for the modernist movement can help us understand how these creative approaches can be applied to 21st century city.

THE GOAL OF THE CONFERNCE

Developing on Wroclaw’s unique modernist heritage, the conference will create a platform to share ideas and showcase best practices that make the modern movement relevant in today’s world. We are looking for examples of activities from around the world that demonstrate how modernist architecture takes on new meaning through education, public diplomacy and dialogue, private initiatives and business ventures as well as conservation and urban renewal projects.

In proposing „Re-learning Modernism for the 21st Century” we are building on the unique modernist heritage of Central Europe with special focus on the vibrant Polish city of Wroclaw. As early as 1900, in this once-German metropolis of Breslau, the Academy of Arts, under the leadership of Hans Poelzig, launched a pioneering educational program where tailored programs and workshops produced novel solutions for real-world projects in rapidly changing urban context around them. The well-grounded, highly practical education program used Breslau as an urban laboratory, which meant that faculty and students understood key issues and problems of the city and region, and took active part in discussions and searches for viable, innovative solutions. It is also earned the city the label of having produced the “Bauhaus before Bauhaus”.

The conference will be a focal point in the 100th anniversary celebrations of the creation of Max Berg’s Centennial Hall and Exhibition Grounds, Wroclaw’s most daring contribution to modernist discourse. Opened in May 1913, Centennial Hall remains dynamic, multifunctional meeting place serving Wroclaw and the region. Added in 2006 to UNESCO’s register of World Heritage Sites, Centennial Hall is undergoing a rousing revitalization effort – to be completed prior to 2013 – that is infusing this iconic modernist landmark with new significance and vibrancy for the 21st century.

WROCLAW

Wroclaw represents an ideal setting for the discussions of the ways in which modernist movement of a particular geographical provenance can be meaningfully reinterpreted. Wroclaw is a bustling, cosmopolitan metropolis. An academic hub with 23 of higher learning, the city’s special character is derived in part from its distinctive architecture that has evolved over countries. Wroclaw’s greatest period of architectural development took place in the first three decades of the 20th century.

With its superb location in the heart of Europe, Wroclaw is easily by accessed road, rail, air and even water (via Odra river).

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Architects, engineers, conservators, building managers and owners, historians and architectural historians, landscape architects, planners and cultural resource managers, preservation officers, contractors, project administrators, developers, historic site and museum managers…
